OBSSERVATIIONS O GROWTH, BODY DIMENSIONS AND CARCASS TRAITS OF NIGERIA INDIGENOUS PIGS

Observations were made on 79 Nigerian indigenous (NI) and 24 Large White pigs.There was. a, three-month delay, in growth acceleration NI pigs as compared with LW pigs. Growth started at 7 4 months for respectively. Over all ages studied, differed markedly from live weight, body length, height, depth ham dimen­sions but this difference was much less between males than females_ In ;boars serially slaughtered, carcass weights doubled 10 of age while dressing percent length reached peak values months. Carcass backfat measurements higher more consistent the shoulder loin or rump. Com­bined longitudinal dissection studies are needed to elucidate curve, true genetic potential fat deposition pattern
